Family-Romper Roundup: 2009 Honda Pilot Meets Its Competition

2009 Honda Pilot

With a silken powertrain, a respectably sized third-row seat, and a proven reliability record (but completely innocuous styling), the previous-generation Honda Pilot was the truck for people who wanted a vehicle to facilitate their active lifestyles or illusion of same with neither complaint nor compromise. Even better, it brought respectable performance and decent fuel economy to the sport-ute class—all while seating eight, one more than in most utes or minivans of its dimensions.

But today’s Pilot customers are seeking even more in their crossovers: more rear-seat space, better fuel economy, and more standard features, but minimal increase in dimensions so the Pilot will still fit their garages. And that’s exactly what Honda gives them for 2009. Boding well for the Pilot is its status as one of the only SUVs in any class to offer a three-across third-row seat, upping the maximum head count to eight.

What Honda didn’t add is more power. The powertrain carries over for the most part, albeit fitted with a couple of new fuel-saving technologies that managed to leave the 3.5-liter V-6’s output of 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque intact. Interesting to note, however, is that in spite of all Honda did to eke fuel economy from this powertrain, its estimated 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway are up only 1 mpg each from 2008.

Now, if more pizazz was on the list of customer requests for 2009, it clearly wasn’t very high. Honda did add a bit more flash to the front end in the form of the headlights and a chunky grille, but there are more right angles on the thing than you’ll find in a T-square factory—typical of Honda’s painfully cautious approach to aesthetics. However, the design ideology is consistent with the interior design precept that the furnishings within a space shouldn’t call so much attention to themselves as to distract from the people within it.

Viewed in that light, the Pilot should be very flattering to all inside.
